In Serbia, at the beginning of the 2000s, after the October 5th coup and regime change, numerous publicly owned companies were privatized during the transition to an uncontrolled market economy. During that process, the privatization of the publicly owned »Beograd film« company – Belgrade cinema distribution network, which in its golden years had owned twenty-four cinema halls in the Capital – was executed. This privatization has attracted the attention of the cultural community due to its particularly criminal and reckless execution. The entire case culminated in 2014, when the activists occupied one of the companies cinemas, namely Cinema Zvezda, situated in the heart of Belgrade, with the aim of creating a space for engaging in diverse perspectives on political, cultural, and social reality.
