Ethical and moral dilemmas of modern fast-paced and competitive science, or Nature, 505(7485), 641-647 and 676-680, RETRACTED

Science, as a social phenomenon, encompasses diverse individuals, including scientists who aren‘t exempt from human struggles. Unethical practices often stem from unpredictable situations. The field of stem cells is rapidly advancing, particularly after the discovery of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) by Japanese researcher Shinya Yamanaka in 2012. The controversial concept of STAP cells isn‘t entirely implausible, as a mechanism for tissue self-regeneration it would be logical. Currently, differentiated cells can‘t contribute to tissue regeneration. The STAP cell theory proposes an alternative approach, studying the impact of external stress as a regeneration catalyst. Scientific fraud cases like STAP cells expose communication gaps, with »unsuccessful« research often left unpublished. Consequently, past mistakes persist. Discoveries like STAP cells underscore the need for transparent communication and learning from failures to drive genuine progress.
